Asia Tour 2011: Liverpool hit six against Malaysia
Full Time: Malaysia 3-6 Liverpool
LIVERPOOL triumphed over a Malaysia XI 6-3 in an entertaining pre-season clash in Kuala Lumpur.
Goals from Charlie Adam, David Ngog (2), Maxi Rodriguez (2) and Dirk Kuyt saw Liverpool come through a scintillating clash against a hard working Malaysia XI who got their goals from Safiq Rahim and Shakir Shaari (2).
Liverpool dominated possession comfortably in the early stages as they knocked the ball around in midfield confidently, but they were struggling to produce any kind of penetration despite their superiority.
Liverpool’s first real effort on goal came from an Adam free-kick which he tried to curl in to the top right corner from twenty-five yards out, it was a good try but was always dropping over the crossbar.
Luckily for the English side they did not have to create a chance from open play to open the scoring as they were gifted a penalty after 24 minutes.
Adam sent in a cross from deep on the left towards the onrushing Andy Carroll, it didn’t look like he was going to get on the end of it, but he felt a slight nudge from Mahali Jasuli and went down causing the referee to point to the spot, although it looked incredibly soft.
Adam didn’t care though as he powered home two penalties after the first was ruled out because of some encroachment into the box.
Liverpool looked to relax a bit and Raul Meireles had a chance at the far post as he got his head to a John Flanagan cross but it was easily saved.
The Reds certainly were not relaxing on 43 minutes though when the Malaysian XI equalised.
Captain Rahim fired in a shot from range which Adam blocked with his hands, Rahim then stepped up to take the resulting free-kick and produced a fabulous strike which left Brad Jones no chance as it rocketed into the top left corner.

Liverpool changed their entire team at half-time and Ngog had chances to make an impact early on in the second half as he latched on to a great Alberto Aquilani ball but his shot was poor and wide of the far post.
The Frenchman made amends though on 67 minutes when he regained the lead for his side.
A cross from Emiliano Insua on the left should have been cut out by the two defenders who were at the near post, but a lack of communication saw neither of them make contact and it reached Ngog at the back post who just had to tap it into an empty net.
The goal had clearly given the substitute confidence as just a minute later Aquilani found him with a great ball to the right of the area, Ngog didn’t spend long thinking about it and hit a fierce early strike which surprised the keeper and left him rooted to the spot as it flew into the top corner.
Liverpool were rampant and made it four in the 75th minute as Aquilani slid in Insua down the left who then flashed a great cross across the six-yard box to find Maxi at the back post who lunged at it just in time to put it into the back of the net.
The game looked as good as over at this point but then Liverpool went to sleep and conceded two goals in quick succession.
First a low cross from the right was very badly dealt with by Peter Gulacsi who dived to cut it out but just fumbled it straight into the path of Shaari who had the simple task of slotting it into an empty goal.
Just a minute later and Shaari had his second as Faruqi played a perfectly weighted through ball from deep which the forward raced onto and finished with confidence firing it back across Gulacsi and into the goal.
The Malaysians smelt blood and were pushing hard for the equaliser but their hopes were dashed in the 90th minute when Auqilani picked out Kuyt on the right and the Dutchman’s pin-point cross landed right on the head of Maxi who was unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box to nod home his second.
Liverpool then wrapped it up in style as Aquilani picked out Kuyt again, this time as he burst into the box and, much like Ngog earlier on, he hit it early and powerfully leaving the keeper no chance to make it an incredible 6-3.
