Profile
CARL JENKINSON
Jenkinson joined Arsenal from League One side Charlton Athletic in June 2011 and was thrown in at the deep end right away, where he enjoyed mixed results.
The right-back only played nine senior games for Charlton where his versatility and pace impressed before being spotted by Arsene Wenger’s scouting network. Having spent time on loan at Eastbourne Borough and Welling United only a year previous, it was quite a rise for the defender and he made his debut for the Gunners against Udinese in the Champions League qualifiers.
His early career at the Emirates saw his confidence dip after being sent off in the 8-2 defeat by Manchester United, but he has been tipped for a bright future by Wenger, who thinks he has the maturity and belief to succeed at the club.
Strengths: He has stamina and speed in abundance and often gets forward to supplement the attack, while he boasts good commitment to the cause.
Weaknesses: Very one-footed and still learning the game positionally. He can be caught out on too many occasions and lacks composure when pressed for the ball.
Career high: Joining Arsenal in the summer of 2011 after only a handful of games for Charlton.
Career low: Drafted into the side after an injury to Bacary Sagna at the start of 2011-12, he was criticised for his part in the 8-2 defeat to Man Utd and was also sent off.
Style: Quick, agile, a pacy full-back.
Quotes: “We were watching Carl for some time and he is a player with great talent and natural defensive ability, but also a powerful player who likes to go forward.” Arsene Wenger on Carl Jenkinson, 2011.
Trivia: His mother is from Finland and he has captained Finland Under-19s and played for the Under-21s.
