Match Summary

Man of the Match: Mesut Ozil. Waving his creative wand again, Ozil glided around the pitch laying on chances and producing openings at will. He may not have scored but he spearheaded Germany’s unrelenting attacks on Greece’s hassled defence.
Germany verdict: Another ruthless win and thoroughly deserved. Must have been particularly satisfying for Joachim Low to watch Miroslav Klose and Marco Reus - two of the three players he somewhat surprisingly brought into the side to freshen things up - both get their names on the scoresheet. The injection of energy from that aforementioned pair and fellow new boy Andre Schurrle, led to Greece’s defence being completely, and constantly, flooded. Germany look an imposing prospect for the semi-finals.
Greece verdict: Did not have a single touch in their opponents’ penalty area in the first half and even when Giorgios Samaras snatched a shock equaliser after the interval, they never looked likely to have enough to hold on. Defensive resiliency took them this far at Euro 2012, but Germany made their backline appear incredibly porous in Gdansk. Can be proud of their efforts at the tournament but there was a disappointing sense of inevitability about their performance in this quarter-final - they seemed resigned to lose from the off.
Could do better: Bastian Schweinsteiger. It may seem harsh to pick on a Germany player but they are a team of perfectionists and the Bayern Munich midfielder had room for improvement. Gave the ball away more often than is expected from such an accomplished passer and lacked positional discipline when being caught upfield for Greece’s goal on the counter-attack.
Stat attack: Germany have now only kept clean sheets in four of their past 19 European Championship matches, managing just one so far at Euro 2012.
