THE shocks continued on the second day of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Angola with Algeria stunned by Malawi in Group A and heavily fancied Ivory Coast denied a win in the opening Group B match against Burkina Faso.
Algeria, bound for the FIFA World Cup later this year, looked shocked after going behind against Malawi in just the 17th minute from a defensive fluke and ended up losing 3-0.
It was a horror start to the event for Les Fennecs, but a time for celebration for the Flames of Malawi, who had never won a Nations Cup match before.
Ivory Coast threatened Burkina Faso’s net often, but Didier Drogba and Bakary Kone missed the target repeatedly as the Elephants had to settle for a scoreless draw.
The tournament favourites will be even more frustrated knowing that they had scored eight goals against the Burkinabe in two FIFA World Cup qualifiers over the last six months.
“We are the biggest underdogs in this tournament but we know our own strengths. We just seek to keep it simple, and this is a good start for us.
“We want to reach as far as we can, and we need to build on what we did in this game.” said Malawi midfield general Joseph Kamwendo.
